The latest Alphaliner inactive fleet report shows that 300 containerships of over 500 teu were out of active service on 13 Mar’, representing a capacity of nearly 1.57 Mteu or 6% of the total cellular fleet.
When excluding all ships which are in shipyards for general repairs or class renewal, the commercially idle fleet consists of 122 ships (721,300 teu). A breakdown of these figures per carrier shows that Maersk is making the biggest effort to remove capacity from trading(29 units of 281,400 teu commercially idled), followed by its 2M partner MSC (13 vessels of 119,000 teu).
Other major carriers are not following this example and typically have only a few ships idled. Furthermore Alphaliner identifies some of these ships as simply undergoing extended waiting times for their next assignment.
