Last week, we analyzed the global Top 30 container ports’ latest annual performance, which was positive for all but two of them in our rankings.
The port of Tanger Med is among those that stand out in terms of annual progress, having again enjoyed a stellar year. The Moroccan port logged a 19% year-on-year increase in volumes to 10.2 Mteu, exceeding the port operator’s own forecast of +9 Mteu.
This also meant that Tanger Med jumped to the number 17 spot in our Top 30 rankings. Its throughput is now 113% up on pre-COVID. While some of the growth will be temporary, with the port benefiting from the Red Sea disruption, not all of the gain can be attributed to the Houthi attacks as around a quarter of the port’s volumes is quoted as Red Sea-related.
Overall, Tanger Med has been steadily increasing its throughput over the past decade, registering a 245% growth in 2024 compared to 2015 throughput.
