At the start of March, the total count of fully cellular Container Ships stood at 6,464 units with a total capacity of over 31.4 Mteu. As a reminder, the historic milestone of 6,000 active cellular vessels in service was surpassed in early 2024.
Compared to two decades ago, the global active fleet has practically doubled. At the same time, the average vessel TEU capacity has increased by 121.3% throughout the same timeframe, as it currently stands at just over 4,850 TEU and is expected to surpass the 5,000 TEU mark by the end of the year.
With the surge ordering activity over Q3 and Q4 of last year, we expect to see a fleet of 6,700 cellular Container Ships with an average vessel capacity of over 5,400 TEU by the end of 2027.
