French ocean carrier CMA CGM received this week the container vessel CMA CGM SEINE from CSSC Hudong Zhonghua. The LNG-powered 23,872 teu ship and her three sisters are an improved variant of the nine LNG-powered vessels that CMA CGM received from CSSC Group in 2020 and 2021.
The vessel type is referred to as the ‘Jacques Saadé’ class. With the exception of the series’ lead unit, the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, all vessels of the original type are named after famous places in Paris and this scheme will be continued with the four ships of the new variant.
CMA CGM ordered the four ‘Jacques Saadé’ class Megamaxes of the enhanced variant in October 2022. Combined with the original nine ships, the additional quartet will give the shipping line a fleet of 13 LNG-powered jumbos to operate a homogenous fleet on an Asia-Europe loop that turns in 13 weeks.
This delivery also brings up CMA CGM’s LNG-fuelled fleet up to 70 units – the most of any carrier, and about 42% of all LNG-fuelled container ships currently in service globally.
