Unifeeder has achieved the highest capacity growth of all carriers in the intraMediterranean service segment over the past twelve months.
Overall, intra-Med service capacity grew by 9.3%, or almost 50,000 teu, compared to December 2023, as carriers deployed more ships (368 vs 345) of a slightly larger average size (1,499 teu vs 1,463 teu) in the Med. In this study, Alphaliner has calculated the market shares of each carrier offering regular intra-Mediterranean container services compared to a year ago.
Unifeeder moved up five places over the year to take the sixth spot in the rankings of largest Med operators by deployed capacity. The Aarhus-based carrier recorded a market share of 4.3% as of 1 December, compared to just 1.5% in 2023. With an enlarged capacity of 24,000 teu, Unifeeder now has nearly the same fleet size in the Med as Chinese liner giant COSCO SHIPPING Lines.
With 20 container ships deployed, Unifeeder is operating thirteen ships more than last year, while its average vessel size has increased by almost 100 teu per ship from 1,091 teu to 1,186 teu (see page 2 sidebar).
Unifeeder has launched seven new intra-Med services in just one year, which have added 10,600 teu of extra capacity to the Med.
The mainline operators (MLOs) still dominate the Mediterranean market segment, with a combined market share of 65%, leaving 35% for the regional carriers and the common feeder operators.
