As Alphaliner reported last month, Container Ship owners and operators were in no rush to restart Suez Canal transits despite the announcement of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and Houthi pledge of limiting attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.
Over the past five weeks, less than 40 Container Ships have crossed the Suez Canal in either direction per week on average. About 68% of those were sub-Panamaxes of less than 4,000 TEU capacity. In February alone, ships of this size registered a 68.3% year-over-year increase in Suez Canal traffic in terms of vessel crossings.
Container Ships between 4,000 and 7,500 TEU crossed the Suez Canal 38 times during the same period, while 21 vessels of TEU capacity between 7,500 and 18,000 passed through.
ULCS Megamax Container Ships of 18,000 and more TEU capacity still continue avoiding the Suez Canal and this week we mark a full year since the last vessel of this type traversed it.
