Reefer capacity on the rise as overall liner fleet keeps growing

Reefer-capacity

Following a strong 19.7% fleet growth over past 12 months, Geneva based MSC has strengthened its position as the liner operator with the highest capacity for transporting temperature-controlled containers.

The carrier’s 815 vessels (as of 29 March) are fitted with a combined total of 583,700 reefer plugs, which represents a year-on-year increase for the line of 17.6%.

Only Ocean Network Express (ONE) recorded a bigger growth in the number of reefer plugs, at +23.1%.

The Japanese-owned carrier grew its overall fleet by 17.5%. Meanwhile, HMM is the only carrier with less reefer capacity than a year ago (-1.3%), as the line reduced its overall fleet capacity by 2.4%.

The ranking of top-10 carriers by reefer plugs generally follows the ranking by total fleet capacity. The one exception is ZIM, which occupies eighth place in our reefer top-10, while standing at number ten in total ranking. Its 130 vessels feature almost 77,700 reefer plugs, or 22.2% of its overall fleet.
