Last month, the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced a proposal targeting Chinese-built vessels. One of the key points included charging $1.5m per port call in the USA for any container ship built in China, regardless of ownership or flag.
While the USTR is currently seeking public comments on this proposal, ending on March 24, 37.8% of the current active Container Ship fleet was built in Chinese shipyards.
Furthermore, the current Container Ship orderbook consisting of just under 800 vessels with a total capacity of over 9 Mteu, has over 70% of its units placed with Chinese shipyards. Indeed, out of the Top 10 shipyards in terms of vessels on order, 7 are located in China.
One of the many features of our AXSInsights module is allowing you to explore the current Container Ship fleet, as well as units on order, in terms of shipbuilding location.
