A survey of ten major container ports in Europe, North America and Asia shows that the overall size of a carrier group is not always directly reflected in a carrier’s ‘traffic exposure’ to each port.
Unsurprisingly, the world’s largest container line MSC, is in fact the biggest customer at seven of the 10 ports surveyed. This is however not the case for Qingdao, where COSCO takes the first spot, or for Hamburg, where the locally headquartered Hapag-Lloyd is also the leading customer.
Alphaliner’s research, summarized in the chart above, confirms that ports not only benefit from the presence of a strong home carrier, but also from allowing container shipping companies to co-own or operate dedicated terminals.
