Container ships: COVID-19 vs. 2008 financial crisis

Containership capacity

Containership operators have emerged much stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic than the 2008 financial crisis due to a mix of generous government aid, buoyant volumes, carrier discipline, and a modest orderbook.

Despite a steep –3.5% decline in world GDP last year, the global throughput of containers was relatively unscathed in 2020 with volumes dropping only -1.4%. This contrasts with 2009 when global GDP fell only -0.1% but container throughput plummeted -8.2%.
