Last month, we counted 562 ships trading on dedicated liner services between the Far East and North America. The vessels represented a total capacity of 5.37 Mteu, up 4.2% from November 2023.
At the time of our survey, some 17% of the global container fleet capacity was deployed between Asia and North America. Only the notably longer Asia – Europe trade corridor, which currently absorbs 24% of the global fleet, accounts for a higher share.
Capacities deployed on Asia – North America, however, differ very much from the overall ranking of carriers by fleet size. The world’s largest container carrier, MSCCargo, which controls 20.2% of the global vessel fleet, only ranks sixth on this trade with a market share of 8.2%.
At the head of the trade, cmacgm has regained the position of market leader from Maersk, which was number one in November 2023. At the time, the Danish carrier had several extra sailers deployed in the trade. Maersk’s market share is now slightly lower at 13.1%, while its French competitor has 13.2%. COSCO follows a close third with 12.9%.
