Like LNG, ammonia is a liquefied gaseous fuel. It is a carbon-free molecule so emits no CO2 during combustion, and the absence of carbon and sulphur compounds in ammonia should prevent the formation of soot and SOx. It has therefore been proposed as a cleaner fuel for industry including its use in power generation and in shipping, provided NOx and N2O emissions from fuel combustion are removed.
