The discontinuation of the 2M partnership in 2025 will bring about deep structural changes in the liner market, a sector so far dominated by three major alliances of roughly comparable market share.
Going forward, MSC and Maersk will once again become independent carriers, while two mega -alliances are set to remain.
Alphaliner expects the 2M split to go smoothly since the VSA members MSC and Maersk have already started to ‘untangle’ their operations.
Most 2M loops are now operated by one carrier, rather than with a mixed vessel fleet. Meanwhile, cooperation within THE Alliance is expected to be ‘business as usual’.
Based on the orderbooks of its members, the Ocean Alliance, already the world’s largest carrier grouping in terms of deployed capacity, is forecast to witness a massive growth in the coming years.
