Port congestion prompts carriers to drop a quarter of all North European calls from Far East – Europe deep-sea loops.
The 18 big Far East – North Europe loops operated by the three mega alliances have skipped a total of 383 #port calls in North Europe over the past five months due to severe port #congestion. The figure represents nearly 25% of all scheduled calls in the period.
The addition of 77 inducement calls has only partly compensated for these massive port omissions. Alphaliner has compared actual #ship calls in North Europe for the services in the 22-week period between 1 Jul and 2 Dec with the published pro forma schedules.
Alphaliner identifies 3 reasons why ports lose calls:
1: An ad hoc omission of certain #ports on specific voyages to limit delays.
2: The temporary removal of calls for a certain number of weeks to restore schedule reliability.
3: High number of blank #sailings.
