The number of container ships awaiting an available berth in the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reached a record level of 86 vessels on 16 Nov. The average waiting time last week exceeded 18 days. However, these figures are only averages.
Some liner services are able to pass the waiting queues & berth at one of the San Pedro twin ports. According to an Alphaliner survey for 62 vessels in the two weeks, transit was recorded from departure from the last Asian port of loading to berthing at LA/LB b/n 5-19 Nov.
The 62 ships needed on average 28 days after leaving Asia before starting to discharge containers in California. However, transit times ranged from only 10 days for the 5,514 teu PRESIDENT WILSON deployed in the APL (CMA CGM) ‘Eagle Express EX1’ service between Busan and LA, to a lengthy 70 days for the 1,732 teu A KINKA deployed by Transfar between Hong Kong (28 Aug) and LA.
