Neo-panamax container vessels (‘NPX’) have become an increasingly popular ship type and no fewer than 92 units of this class are expected to enter service this year.
These ships alone represent a combined 1.4 Mteu, almost half of the newbuilding capacity that is expected to join the global fleet this year.
When the first Neo-panamaxes phased into service in 2008, these ships were the largest vessel class in existence and all of these new jumbos joined the Far East-Europe trade.
In today’s world of ‘Megamax’ vessels, however, the picture looks a lot different and ‘NPX’ ships have become the go-to choice for numerous deep-sea trade corridors. Alphaliner has therefore taken a look at the trades and services that this year’s ‘NPX’ newbuildings have joined or will join.
