The fleet of MSC recently reached a capacity of 6 Mteu. The carrier, owned by the Aponte family, has increased its capacity this year so far by 400,000 teu, equivalent to more than half the size of Yang Ming.
MSC’s 7.1% fleet capacity growth was slightly higher than the market average of 6.2%. Percentagewise, the fastest growing carriers were ZIM (+17.5%) and Hapag-Lloyd (+10.6%).
Last year’s overview of the ‘gainers and losers’ in Х1 2023 also revealed that MSC (in teu) and ZIM (in %) were the fastest growing carriers. MSC continues to increase its fleet through a combination of newbuilding deliveries and the purchase of second-hand tonnage.
Last week’s additions to the MSC fleet included the 25 year old Evergreenveteran EVER UNITY, which was renamed MSC UNITY VI, and the 2003-built ALEXANDER BAY, which continues to trade for its new owner under the name MSC BAY IV.
