Container fleet age ranking: Evergreen operates the youngest fleet among Top 20 carriers

A comparison of container fleets shows significant differences in container fleet age among the world’s largest carriers.

Evergreen’s fleet of nearly 240 vessels, with a combined capacity of just under 2 Mteu, has the youngest average age at 9.3 years.

Wan Hai’s 120 vessels and 0.6 Mteu of capacity rank second, with an average fleet age of 9.4 years.

South Korea’s HMM, which recently surpassed the milestone of 1 Mteu in total capacity across its 96-strong fleet, completes the top three with an average fleet age of 9.6 years.

The global leader in both ship count and total capacity, MSCCargo , does not top the charts for once. In this comparison, it ranks third from last, with an average fleet age of just under 17 years.

Overall, larger carriers tend to operate relatively older fleets. Maersk ranks sixteenth with an average fleet age of 14.9 years, while cmacgm stands tenth at 13.2 years. COSCOSHIPPING follows in thirteenth place with 13.6 years, and HapagLloydAG ranks twelfth at 13.3 years.
