Alphaliner’s August review of the intra-Asia (excluding domestic) trade reveals that the Danish carrier Maersk increased the largest number of operated slots in the region over the past year, adding a huge 100,000 teu to reach 298,134 teu.
This jump almost closed the gap with the number one carrier in the region, COSCO Group.
COSCO, which still sits in pole position, deploys 300,491 teu slots in the trade. Meanwhile, in addition to its regional capacity in Asia, COSCO also operates more than 200,000 teu slots in the Chinese domestic market.
The intra-Asia regional trade is still a very competitive market, with at least 69 active players. The region saw a strong 13% y-o-y gain, taking overall tonnage to 2.4 Mteu.
The market is dominated by the top-20 carriers, with the remaining operators outside of it accounting for just 13% of the total.
