Container ship capacity deployed on Far East-Europe routes exceeded 7.9 Mteu in May, registering an 11.7% year-over-year increase. Nearly 90% of the active fleet on these trades consists of vessels with capacities above 12,500 TEU.
Meanwhile, the sub-Saharan Africa-related trade area, recently seeing the first ULCS Megamax container ship call at the Ghanaian ports of Tema and Lome, experienced the strongest annual growth in May at 19.5%.
In terms of year-over-year progress, Intra-Europe routes ranked second with +12.4%, followed closely by Latin America at +12.2%. Far East-North America was the only trade lane to decline, down 0.9% compared to last year, with capacity falling below 5 Mteu for the first time in nearly two years.
