Alternative-propulsion Container Ships now in the majority

In terms of TEU capacity, vessels powered by LNG, methanol, or fitted with exhaust scrubbers now carry 50.6% of all containers.

Traditional propulsion still leads in vessel count, with 4,850 ships, accounting for about 73.6% of the global fleet. LNG-powered ships represent 3.2% of the fleet (208 vessels), methanol-powered ships just 0.6% (38 vessels), while scrubber-fitted vessels make up 22.6% (1,492 vessels).

In terms of capacity, however, conventionally powered container ships now account for less than 16.1 Mteu, or 49.4% of the world’s total.

LNG-powered ships contribute 7.6% (2.46 Mteu), methanol-powered ships 1.3% (~0.4 Mteu), and scrubber-fitted ships hold the remaining 41.8% (13.6 Mteu).

The alternative-propulsion segment is only set to expand, with the current orderbook including more than 720 vessels (75% of all on order), representing over 9.3 Mteu (93% of capacity) powered by alternative fuels.
