The fall of the BDI index observed last week has a name, and it is called Capesize. The fall is attributed to an expected seasonal dip in cargo demand ahead of the Chinese New Year which dragged the Capesize segment, while at the same time the specific ship type was affected by the decreased productivity of Western Australia’s mining giant companies as Rio Tinto etc.This time of the year usually represents a seasonal low period for the Capesize segment.
