This study demonstrates that greenhouse gas emissions can increase when vessels carrying cargo originating in Asia bypass seaports on the U.S. West Coast. In most circumstances, cargo routed from Asia through U.S. West Coast ports provides considerable greenhouse gas (GHG) benefits as compared to other U.S. port gateways.
