LNG-fueled Container Ships make up over half of the entire orderbook

The current global Container Ship orderbook consists of nearly 800 vessels exceeding 9 Mteu of total capacity.

With the introduction of new ECA areas and global emission regulations, owners are moving away from scrubber-fitted Container Ships to LNG- and Methanol-fueled vessels.

Over 56% of the current orderbook capacity, or more than 5.1 Mteu, is represented by LNG-fueled units. In terms of vessel count, the LNG “domination” is less pronounced, even though the largest chunk of 346 ships (43.4% of total) are still orders of this type.

Scrubbers are still the most commonly used system for emissions reduction in Container Ships, with over 22% of the entire fleet in terms of vessel count, and over 41.5% in terms of capacity, currently sailing equipped with one.

Naturally, larger vessels are given priority, with about 76.9% of all LNG and 63.1% of all Methanol new orders being Container Ships of more than 10,000 TEU capacity.
