The number of cellular container vessels changing hands on the sale and purchase market dropped sharply in ’22, falling back in line with averages seen over the previous decade & driven by a near total collapse in deals in the last quarter of the year.
A total of 295 container ships equivalent to 950,300 teu were sold in ’22, a decline of 49% by number & 53% by capacity compared to ’21 which broke all previous records with a final breath-taking tally of 2.04 Mteu sold.
Instead, the capacity changing hands in 2022 was in line with yearly averages seen over the 2012 – 2021 period.
